Diffusing Disputes with Neighbors
Even if you live in a beautiful community in a beautiful house, a conflict with a neighbor will make it a horrible experience to live there. That’s why settling those conflicts quickly and amicably makes sense.
How do you do that? Here are some tips:
- Deal quickly with the issue. It is tempting to avoid facing an uncomfortable confrontation with a neighbor and hope that the issue will go away. Rarely would that happen? You need to move swiftly to resolve a conflict.
- Stop anger shows. Usually, behaving angrily just gets the other person on the defensive. It can exacerbate the issue, leading to a resolution seldom, if ever.
- Isolate the problem. Never generalize a contention with a neighbor. Be accurate.
- Do not complain, instead propose. Give a solution instead of moaning about noisy music at night. If our front lights have been switched off, for instance, that means we have gone to bed. Will it be possible at that moment to turn the music down? Uh, thanks!”
- When there’s a settlement, say thanks. You might not be close friends in the future, but being cordial may help ease the stress a long way.
